Fly Fishing in Roatan from the Cruise Port

If your cruise stops in Roatan, you have a rare chance to fly fish world-class Caribbean flats during your port day — and be back aboard in time for departure. At Roatan On The Fly, we’ve guided hundreds of cruise passengers over the years, and we’ve turned the logistics into a science. Here’s how a cruise-day trip works, whichever port you dock at.

Which cruise port are you docking at?

Roatan has two cruise terminals, and we pick you up from either:

  • Mahogany Bay (Carnival and Princess ships)
  • Coxen Hole / Town Center (Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and others)

When you book, just tell us your ship and port. We arrange private transportation from the terminal to the water and back, timed around your all-aboard.

How a cruise-day trip works

Port days are short, so everything is built for efficiency:

  1. We meet you at the terminal and drive you to the fishing grounds on Roatan’s east end.
  2. You fish a guided half-day on the flats for bonefish and permit, with a shot at tarpon in the mangroves if conditions line up.
  3. We get you back to your ship on time — we plan the day around your departure so you never have to watch the clock.

Everything is included: private transport, all gear, licenses, and snacks/drinks. You just bring sun protection and a sense of adventure.

What you can realistically catch in a half-day

A half-day is enough to get real shots at fish. Bonefish are the most reliable target and a fantastic first catch on the fly, and permit are very much in play on the flats. Plenty of our cruise guests — including total beginners — have landed their first bonefish on a port day. For more on the fishery, see our Roatan bonefishing guide.

Will you make it back in time?

Yes — this is the question every cruiser asks, and it’s exactly why booking with an experienced local guide matters. We know the drive times from both terminals, build in a buffer, and have safely returned hundreds of passengers to their ships. We’d rather end a few minutes early than ever put your departure at risk.

Traveling with non-anglers?

We’ve got your group covered. Alongside fishing, we can help arrange snorkeling, mangrove and island tours, and more, so everyone has a memorable day in Roatan. Just ask when you book.

Beats the crowded bus tour

Most cruise excursions pack you onto a bus with fifty strangers. A morning sight-fishing pristine flats with a private guide is the kind of experience you’ll still be talking about long after the cruise — and far more rewarding.
